James was elected State Young Liberal President on 16th July 2004 at the age of 21. He served on the Young Liberal State Executive for two years prior to that as well as serving as President of the Bragg Young Liberals. During James’ term, the Young Liberals campaigned with distinction in two election campaigns – particularly the 2004 federal campaign with the Liberal Party winning 8 of 11 lower house seats. Membership expanded significantly including the establishment of new branches in country South Australia.
After he concluded his second year as State Young Liberal President, James was re-elected to the Liberal Party’s State Executive by the State Council of the Liberal Party as the Party’s Campaign Co-ordinator.
