Matt was elected South Australian Young Liberal President in July 1993. Within four months, the Liberal Party won a record State Election in which former Young Liberal President Dean Brown was elected Premier and many Young Liberals played a critical role. Matt had previously served on the Young Liberal State Executive for two years. In January 1995, Matt became the second SA Young Liberal President ever to be elected as Federal Young Liberal President, serving until January 1996.
After completing his Young Liberal Presidency, Matt pursued his finance career, moving to Melbourne and then New York where he spent five years working on Wall Street, before moving back to Australia to take up a position with Macquarie Bank in Sydney in 2005.
In 2005, Matt was made a Life Member of the South Australian Young Liberal Movement.
