Michelle was elected South Australian Young Liberal President in July 1995, the first female President for nearly 40 years. She served as State President for two years, having spent the previous 5 years as a member of the Young Liberal Executive as well as serving three terms as President of the Heysen Young Liberals. In January 1996, she became the Federal Young Liberal Movement’s Treasurer.
After serving as State President, Michelle was elected as a Party Vice President for three consecutive terms. In 2001 she was selected at number four on the Liberal Party’s Senate ticket for the 2001 federal Election. After the retirement of the Honourable Diana Laidlaw, Michelle was selected to fill her casual vacancy and was appointed to the Legislative Council in May 2003. In March 2006, she was re-elected for a further 8 year term and was subsequently promoted to the Front Bench in April 2006 as Shadow Minister for Mental Health & Substance Abuse, Status of Women, and Correctional Services.
From July 2003 to July 2005 she served as Parliamentary Patron of the South Australian Young Liberal Movement and was appointed a Life Member of the organisation in July 2003.
